The winners of the State Semifinal matches returned to Ritchie Coliseum for the State Finals on Saturday, November 19th.  The Class 2A title was won by Century, their first, over Fallston, 3-1.  Class 1A followed later with Smithsburg downing Perryville in three straight games for their 8th state title.  Class 4A featured a battle of unbeatens with defending champ Sherwood defeating Arundel, 3-0 for their third state title.  The tournament wrapped up with the Class 3A title match going 5 games as North Hagerstown prevailed over River Hill, 3-2 for their first state volleyball championship.  Also, the Lesley A. Cooke Volleyball Tournament Sportsmanship Award was presented to La Plata HS.  As an added bonus, the  final championship matches were videotaped and can be viewed on the internet. Commemorative DVD's will also be available for sale at the same site. Click here to access the video and DVD's.

There are many people to thank for the success of this year's tournament.  First, the MPSSAA extends their deepest appreciation to the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Services and Facility Manager Lawrence Moody for their unwavering  support and cooperation in continuing to allow Ritchie Coliseum to be the "home" for our tournament.  Thanks, too, to the many workers and committee members who come together each year at this time to make sure the state championships are memorable for all of the spectators and participants. We also want to thank the members of the State Volleyball Committee, especially Director Peggy Troiano and Tournament Director Sybil Modispacher, for their committment throughout the season and through the regionals to making volleyball special and the tournaments extraordinary.  We look forward to next year being even better!
