State Champs Are A Cut Above The Rest

It was picture perfect tennis weather for the State Tennis Tournament as matches wrapped up on Saturday at the University of Maryland - College Park Cole Field House tennis courts.  After all of the points were totaled, Region 2 - Montgomery County repeated again as the overall winner.  Select the links above to view the bracket with complete results for each of the five events: Boys' Singles, Girls' Singles, Boys' Doubles, Girls' Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

In Boys' Singles, Whitman's Aries Wong downed Wootton's Titas Bera 6-1, 6-0 in the title match while in Boys' Doubles, River Hill's Nicholas Zhu and Prateek Swamykumar topped runners-up Nathan Homon and Luke Shuck of Tuscarora 7-6, 6-3 for the gold medal.  In Girls' Singles, Wootton's Miranda Deng battled Whitman's Kamille Beischova before prevailing by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 for the top spot in the state.  Churchill's Sriya Movva and Hayley Keats defended their 2013 Girls' Doubles title successfully by virtue of their 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Aisha Iyer and Katarina Sherman of Wootton.  Last but not least, in Mixed Doubles, Churchill's Katie Gauch won her second state Mixed title in a row but with a new partner in Elliott Thacker as they teamed up to defeat Eden Sela and Justin New of Walter Johnson, 6-3, 6-2.

We would like to extend our utmost appreciation the members of the State Tennis Committee, led by Jim Rodriguez, for their tireless efforts in setting up and running not only the region tourneys but the State Tournament as well.  Thanks too to our friends in the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Services for allowing us to hold our event at the Cole Fieldhouse Tennis courts and for their first class assistance throughout our event.  We are looking forward to an even better tournament next year.  Until then, best wishes to all for a safe and relaxing summer!
