In celebration of 50 Years of Title IX, the MPSSAA Girls’ Lacrosse Committee would like to honor our state committee director, Ms. Melba Williams. NFHS Sport Questionnaires for Coaches, Officials, and Athletic Administrators (Winter Sports)

The NFHS is distributing the annual sport-specific questionnaires for winter sports. They can be accessed directly on the NFHS website. Coaches, Athletic Directors, and Officials are asked to participate in the NFHS rules-writing process by taking the annual rules questionnaire. It is provided so the opinions of a national sampling of registered officials and coaches will be considered by the NFHS Rules Committee.

The Minds in Motion Scholarship, is awarded to female and male senior scholar-athletes who attend a MPSSAA school and participate in MPSSAA-recognized sports. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded toward post-secondary education for qualifying applicants and is presented to the winners at a luncheon. The 2021 MPSSAA Golf Championships concluded on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the University of Maryland Golf Course. The Championship field on the final day included 104 golfers from 51 schools.

State Board of Education Approves MPSSAA Waiver Requests for 2021-2022 Academic Year

The Maryland State Board of Education at their August 24, 2021 meeting supported the request for waiver of interscholastic athletic regulations found in COMAR 13A.06.03. These regulations, at the request of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and local Superintendent of Schools, will give the local school systems (LSS) the flexibility to navigate county COVID-19 restrictions and administer interscholastic athletic opportunities based on local conditions.

MPSSAA Announces James Byrd as State Football Rules Interpreter

The MPSSAA is proud to announce the appointment of James Byrd to the position of State Football Rules Interpreter effective July 1, 2021. Mr. Byrd replaces Bill Witte who stepped down from the position after serving as Football Rules Interpreter for more than a decade.

The MPSSAA Board of Control met on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 with Spring State Championships on the agenda. Sport tournament directors from each of the MPSSAA Spring administer state championships presented plans for the administration of Spring state championships between June 5 - June 19, 2021. The Board of Control overwhelmingly voted in favor of the proposal, returning Spring state championships to Maryland for the first time since May 2019.

Urbana High School Student Wins MPSSAA 75th Anniversary Logo Contest

Baltimore, Md. - In conjunction with today’s celebration of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 75-Anniversary, the association is unveiling a 75-anniversary logo to be used for the remainder of the 2020-2021 academic year. The commemorative logo was originated by Patrick DiMisa, a senior at Urbana High School in Frederick County, as part of the MPSSAA 75-Anniversary logo contest.

Seventy-five years ago on January 26, 1946, representatives from local school systems and the Maryland State Department of Education met at the Enoch Pratt Library in downtown Baltimore to establish the framework for a state high school athletic association to replace the loosely organized "Playground Athletic League".

The MPSSAA mourns the passing of former MPSSAA Executive Director, Paul Rusko. Mr. Rusko served as Executive Director of the association during the 1970-71 school year. Mr. Rusko was a longtime Anne Arundel County Athletic and Physical Education Supervisors, serving until 1991. Rusko also served as the first chairman of the State Wrestling Committee.

MPSSAA Mourns the Passing of Milly Wilson

The MPSSAA learned this morning the passing of Milly Wilson. Ms. Wilson, a former Baltimore County physical education teacher and coach, volunteered a tremendous amount of time to the MPSSAA for 47 consecutive years, promoting the increased participation of female student-athletes. The MPSSAA awarded Milly in 2016 with the National Federation of State High School Associations' State Award for Outstanding Service. Please keep Milly Wilson and her family in your thoughts.

MPSSAA Fall and Winter Competition Seasons Postponed

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) in consultation with the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), and the Public School Superintendent Association of Maryland (PSSAM) has decided to postpone the 2020 high school fall and winter competition season during the first semester. The MPSSAA, the MDH, and the PSSAM are finalizing a hybrid two-semester plan focused on student engagement options in the first semester.

The Maryland State Board of Education supported the request for waiver of interscholastic athletic regulations found in COMAR 13A.06.03 at today's meeting. These regulations, at the request of MPSSAA and local Superintendents of Schools, will give the local school systems (LSS) the flexibility to navigate county/city COVID-19 restrictions and administer interscholastic athletic opportunities based on local conditions. The State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Karen Salmon has announced the availability of member schools to re-engage student-athletes in outdoor participation. Dr. Salmon, in her remarks on June 10, 2020, was indicating that school practices may begin in accordance with the appropriate timeline for high school sports as described in COMAR 13A.06.03, which is currently August 12, 2020. Wednesday's (2/20) school closings have caused the postponement of the Free State/Frederick County Baseball and Softball umpires clinics at Winters Mills HS. These have been rescheduled for Monday, 2/25 at the same times and location. The Baltimore County Track Officials' clinic at Loch Raven HS has also been postponed to a new date to be determined. A full day of hard-nosed wrestling concluded with two new state Dual Meet champions and two successful Dual Meet title defenses. Damascus maintained their streak of titles with their 9th overall and 7th consecutive in winning the Class 2A crown while county-mate Springbrook brought home their 1st state title in Class 4A. Southern-Garrett also successfully defended their crown in Class 1A for their 3rd overall as Stephen Decatur prevailed over Linganore to win their 2nd title in Class 3A.

We are extremely sad to share the news that Patricia "Pat" Barry, longtime Coordinator of Montgomery County Public School Athletics (MCPS), passed away Thursday night, 9/6. Pat was a champion for equity and a true pioneer in the field of athletic administration, serving not only MCPS but the MPSSAA in multiple capacities. Pat served as MPSSAA President from 1994-1996 and on many State Tournament Committees, including the MPSSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament.

The 2017 State Field Hockey Championships came to a chilly close on Saturday with four closely contested games which highlighted crisp offense and stingy defense. Class 4A South River edged Dulaney for their 6th overall title and 2nd consecutive, 2-1. Class 1A Patuxent followed with their first ever State title over a tough Francis Scott Key squad, 2-0. Class 2A Glenelg nipped Hereford by a score of 1-0 and Chesapeake-AA successfully defended last year's 3A title over C.M. Wright, 2-0.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has just announced that the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 28th consecutive year in 2016‐17 – drawing close to the 8 million mark – according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey (see link inside of story). Maryland's participation numbers also experienced an increase last year to 112,414 student-athletes.

Additional congratulations go to our 3 first-time state champions. The Northern-Calvert Boys edged Glenelg, 5-4 and the boys from Southern-AA prevailed over South Carroll, 20-7. On the girls side, Bel Air nipped Severna Park in another thriller, 10-9.

The MPSSAA is saddened by the news of the passing of Mildred H. Murray yesterday, 3/29. Mrs. Murray served 43-years in the Baltimore County Public Schools system as a teacher, coach and administrator before retiring in 1991 as the Coordinator of Physical Education and Athletics. Not only did Mildred serve the MPSSAA as the first female President in 1978, she served as the first MPSSAA State Committee Director for Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Field Hockey, Softball, and Girls Lacrosse.

Warrior Lacrosse Named As Official Lacrosse Equipment Provider Of MPSSAA!!

The MPSSAA Executive Council voted to accept the contract proposal from Warrior Lacrosse at yesterday's meeting as the official lacrosse equipment provider of the MPSSAA beginning with the Spring, 2017 season and running through the end of the Spring, 2021 season. Warrior takes over the lacrosse sponsorship from Harrow who had been an MPSSAA sponsor for the past seven years.

The MPSSAA Executive Council voted at last week's meeting to accept the contract proposal from Spalding as the official state volleyball beginning with the Fall, 2016 season and running through the Fall, 2020 season. The Spalding VB5 ball with red, white, and black panels will be required for region and state tournament play and highly recommended for play throughout the regular season.

Change To COMAR Regulations Regarding Swim Meet Scheduling Becomes Effective 1/7/16!!

The Maryland State Board of Education has approved the adoption of an amendment to the COMAR regulations regarding swimming that becomes effective on 1/7/16 for the current season. The amendment will permit swim teams to compete in meets on consecutive days and schedule three meets in a week one time during the regular season.

The Maryland State Board of Education has appointed Mr. Jason Bursick as the new Assistant Director of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). The MPSSAA is saddened by the news of the passing of Roy Comer on 11/4. Roy served as the Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics in the Frederick County Public Schools from 1967-1990. Not only did Roy serve this association as President and Treasurer, he was instrumental in the formation of the first state high school football tournament in Maryland and served fourteen years as our State Football Committee Director.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has just announced that the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 26th consecutive year in 2014‐15 – topping the 7.8 million mark for the first time – according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey. The State Basketball Finals came to a successful conclusion on Saturday, 3/14 as Meade, Oakland Mills, Centennial, and New Town hauled down Boys titles at the Xfinity Center. On the Girls side, Eleanor Roosevelt, Milford Mill, Patterson Mill, and Forestville raised the champions trophy at SECU Arena. State Swimming & Diving Champions Rise To The Top!!

The Class 4A/3A State Swimming meet was finally held on 3/11 and when the waves in the pool subsided, the Walter Johnson boys and Winston Churchill girls came away with the team crowns. Walter Johnson's boys posted their third state title by topping Richard Montgomery 272 - 238. Winston Churchill's girls earned their first state title by scoring 288.5 points to Sherwood's 249. Eight region tournaments took place Friday, 2/27 and Saturday, 2/28 with four regions in each classification (4A/3A and 2A/1A). The top four place winners in each weight class qualify to compete for a state title for the final time at Cole Field House on the campus of the University of Maryland-College Park on Friday, 3/6 and Saturday, 3/7. As part of the festivities, an invitation is being extended to all former MPSSAA State Wrestling Champions who have won at least one of their titles at Cole to be introduced on the floor just prior to the start of the State Final bouts on Monday evening, March 9th in conjunction with the "Parade of Champions". The 2014 State Field Hockey Finals have drawn to another successful close at Washington College. Class 3A jump started the day as Westminster prevailed over Linganore, 2-0. Class 4A followed with Severna Park downing B-CC, 4-1. Class 1A North Carroll successfully defended their title over Fallston, 2-1 and Class 2A wrapped up the day as Hereford defeated Kent Island, 2-1. Kent Island also took home the tournament Sportsmanship Award in addition to the runner-up trophy.

The MPSSAA Classification Committee met on Thursday, 11/6 and unanimously put forth recommended region and section alignments for the 2015-17 academic years. The recommendations will be presented to the MPSSAA Board of Control at their December meeting for final approval.
