Making A Racket At Maryland

    The State Tennis Tournament has come to a hot, but successful conclusion at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park.  Several familiar faces but many more new faces donned the first place gold medals for their events.  Select the links above to view the brackets with the complete results of every match in each of the five competed events.  (Updated 9:50 am, 6/13/12)

     In the final match of the day, Mateo Cevallos of Wootton HS outlasted Biyik Akinshemoyin of Reservoir HS to earn the Boys' Singles gold medal by a score of 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 3-3 (retired).  Biyik was unable to continue play in the third and final set due to persistent leg cramps.  In Boys' Doubles, Sean Ngo & Aries Wong of Whitman HS successfully defended their title in defeating Juha Ellonen & William Clark of Great Mills HS, 6-4, 6-1.  Wootton HS had another gold medalist in Mixed Doubles when Aishu Iyer & Julian Mu topped Rachel Land & Tyler Collins of Huntingtown HS, 6-3, 6-1.

     First, we extend a huge thank you to our State Tennis Committee, led by Director Russ Maxwell.  This group has the primary responsibilities of organizing and conducting the region tournaments in addition to the of running the state tournament.  We appreciate everyone's committment, effort, and professionalism...all in addition to your teaching duties.  We would also like to thank all of those who ran the region tournaments.  We appreciate your superior cooperation and assistance in hosting these events. FInally, our thanks to the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Services for the use of the Cole Tennis Courts for our tournament.  The cooperation and assistance we receive is always second to none.  Have a fun summer everyone and we look forward to next spring!
