Four State Titles Come Down To The Wire

The 2011 State Championship meets for Indoor Track and Field have come to a thrilling conclusion as half of the state titles were decided by a margin of 1.5 points or less!  Select the links above for meet results by classification. (updated 2/24/11, 10:30 a.m.)

In Monday's hotly contested Class 2A meets, 3 points separated the top 3 boys teams and only 2 points came between the top 3 girls teams with Century taking home both first place trophies.  The Century boys totalled 47 points to edge Oakland Mills (45) and Glenelg (44).  Meanwhile the Century girls tallied 52 points to nip Liberty (51) and Digital Harbor (50).

In Class 1A, the boys side was very close as well. Carver Vocational-Technical HS squeezed by Catoctin scoring 80.5 points to their 79 points.  The girls 1A title fell firmly into the hands of Western School of Technology & Environmental Science as they racked up 81 points to runner-up Boonsboro's 49 points.

Competition resumed on Wednesday after Tuesday's weather-related postponement with the 4A boys dueling to the end before DuVal prevailed over Thomas Johnson, 54 points to 53.5 points.  Churchill was third with 42 points.  Equally tight was the race in the 3A girls with Western of Baltimore (38) and Mt. Hebron (39) falling just short of Damascus (40.5).  By comparison, the Atholton boys (62) topped Linganore (44) and Hereford (34) for the Class 3A crown while in Class 4A, the Northwest girls (69) handled challengers Thomas Johnson (47) and Eleanor Roosevelt (39) to claim the championship trophy.

Our hearfelt thanks go out to the State Indoor Track Committee, the meet officials, volunteers, and Region meet sites and directors for their outstanding efforts this season.  We could not have had the precision and success required by events of this extent without a total team effort. Give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done!
