"Digging" A State Title

Every team fought long and hard and when the smoke cleared from the court at Ritchie Coliseum three teams had successfully defended their titles while another claimed their 13th state crown. You can re-live each exciting play with on-demand viewing and make DVD purchases at MPSSAANETWORK.com. Click on the links above to view the result of every match up to and including the state final. (updated 11/17/12, 10:45 pm)

On Friday, the Class 1A title match kicked things off as Smithsburg rolled to their 4th title in a row and ninth overall by defeating Perryville, 3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-4).  The highly energized Class 3A final followed as North Hagerstown defended their title (2nd overall) against upset-minded Centennial, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-12).  Monday's matches began with a see-saw Class 2A battle where Williamsport edged Calvert, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) for their 13th overall state championship.  Class 4A put an exclamation point on the evening with a powerful match between Sherwood and Arundel.  Sherwood completed an undefeated season (19-0) and a three-peat of the 4A title in three games (27-25, 25-14, 25-13) for their 4th state crown.  One final presentation went to Eleanor Roosevelt who received the Lesley A. Cooke Tournament Sportsmanship Award.

The MPSSAA extends congratulations to all of the schools that participated in this year's tournament and we appreciate your cooperation and support throughout. Our sincerest gratitude to the State Volleyball Committee, especially Director Peggy Troiano and Tournament Director Sybil Modispacher, and all of the region tournament directors for another outstanding job of planning leading up to this culminating event. Once again, we cannot thank Campus Recreation Services at the University of Maryland enough for their hospitality, cooperation, and support in working with us to provide the first class facilities at Ritchie Coliseum for our volleyball championships.  And last but not least, thank you fans for your support. Hope to see you again next fall!
