Nationwide Participation In High School Sports Nears The 8 Million Mark!!

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has just announced that the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 28th consecutive year in 2016‐17 – drawing close to the 8 million mark – according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey (see link inside of story). Maryland's participation numbers also experienced an increase last year to 112,414 student-athletes.

The 8th annual Student-Athlete Leadership Conference, sponsored by the Allstate Foundation, was hosted by Howard HS on Saturday, 6/10 and all who attended left energized and enlightened! Comedienne Kathy Buckley kicked off both the morning and afternoon sessions sharing her extraordinary life's story to deliver the message that anything can be achieved when the heart and mind work together!

The fourteen recipients of the 2017 Minds In Motion Scholar-Athlete Scholarships, along with their parents, school representatives, and district level athletic administrators took part in a luncheon held in their honor today (6/1) in the Ravens Locker Room at M&T Bank Stadium. These scholarships are made possible by the Allstate Foundation who also had several representatives in attendance. Thank you Allstate Foundation!

The 2017 State Baseball champions had to not only prevail over their competition but the rain as well. We appreciate everyone's patience, understanding, and cooperation as rain delayed the start of the final two games on Saturday several hours. Kudos to the grounds crew at Ripken for a fantastic job of prepping the field! There were no nail-biting pitcher's duels this year as the 2017 State Champions prevailed over their competition with impressive displays of offensive power and skill. Bohemia Manor (1A), North Caroline (2A), C. Milton Wright (3A), and Northwest (4A) all took home their fourth, sixth, sixth, and first state titles, respectively. Five out of eight returning state champions successfully defended their 2016 crowns at the State Meets this weekend. The Boonsboro Girls (1A), Lackey Girls (2A), Charles H. Flowers Girls (4A), Oxon Hill Boys (3A), and Northwest Boys (4A) all prevailed over some stiff competition. Joining them were the Boonsboro Boys (1A), the Century Boys (2A), and the Frederick Girls (3A). The 2017 State Tennis Tournament proved difficult for the defending champs this weekend. Wootton's Joseph Brailovsky outlasted Pikesville's Jake Fishkin to retain his Boys Singles title while in Mixed Doubles, Walter Johnson's Ethan Kowalski teamed up with new partner Anna Radeviciute to retain that crown over Mt. 2017 Lacrosse State Finals Finish In Fast, Furious, Fantastic Fashion!!

The State Lacrosse Championships came to a thrilling close last night with the Severna Park Boys and Churchill Boys battling until the last second as Severna Park netted a buzzer-beater to prevail 7-6 for their 7th state crown. Additional congratulations go to our 3 first-time state champions. The Northern-Calvert Boys edged Glenelg, 5-4 and the boys from Southern-AA prevailed over South Carroll, 20-7. On the girls side, Bel Air nipped Severna Park in another thriller, 10-9.
