The State Tennis Tournament came to a steamy conclusion at Wilde Lake Tennis Center in Howard County on Saturday as three players successfully defended last year's state titles.  Select the links below to view a summary of championship match results as well as the complete State Tournament results for each of the five events: Boys Singles, Girls Singles, Boys Doubles, Girls Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

Saturday's championship matches were displays of sound fundamentals in action.  In Boys Singles, Thomas Wootton's Joseph Brailovsky successfully defended his title for the third consecutive time by a score of 6-0, 7-6 (9-8).  Ayana Akli from Wheaton was also successful defending her 2017 title in Girls Singles cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.  The other successful title defense came in Mixed Doubles as Walter Johnson's Ethan Kowalski won his third consecutive state title in this event as he teamed up with Lea Kosanovic to win 6-2, 6-1. In Boys Doubles, the Richard Montgomery duo of Justin Song and Arno Babcock came from behind to win in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while Annie Dong and Elle Esterowitz from Thomas Wootton won the Girls Doubles title in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The MPSSAA appreciates the hard work and flexibility of our schools and athletic departments in completing the region tournaments in spite of an overabundance of rain.  Everyone's spirit of cooperation allowed the State tournament to take place as scheduled and we thank you!  Thanks also go to all of the Region Tournament Directors and region tournament sites for working through the weather and rescheduling to get things done.  It also goes without saying how indebted we are to State Committee Director Jean Vanderpool along with the administration and staff at the Wilde Lake Tennis Center for the use of their fantastic facility to hold our event.  The level of cooperation that we receive is spectacular and we look forward to returning again next year.  See you there in 2019!
