Update From Indy

Greetings from the Midwest…It's Day 3 and we have been non-stop busy.  Therefore, while the student delegates clean themselves of paint and dirt from their community service project today, I'll try to give you a brief update from the 2009 NFHS Student Leadership Conference.

Friday was a fun filled day of workshops, guest speakers and break-out sessions in which students discussed sportsmanship, leadership, what it takes to be a noble athlete and as leaders how they can make changes in their own state, district, school and community.  Following the day of hard work, the NFHS had a special treat in store for all the student delegates:  A trip to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

Completely emptied out for just the NFHS Conference delegates (and many thanks to The Children's Museum for such a grand gesture), students walked through exhibits on five stories; including King Tut, Dinosaurs and the interactive top floor with the popular carousel.  The delegates also took time to have a Q and A session with two medal-winning Olympians.

Saturday brought on the last break-out section and a final chance to meet as a state and set goals for the future.  Your two adult delegates could not be more proud of the ideas, enthusiasm and pure leadership that were evident in planning their action plans.

Following the state meeting students participated in a city-wide community service project, traveling to high schools all over Indianapolis to do various community service work and get those schools ready for the upcoming school year.  Between moving rocks, pulling weeds, painting and pushing dirt, your Maryland student delegation left Manual High School in much better shape than when they first arrived.

With one day left, more work is still to come before we make our way back home to Maryland.  Before then we hope to have another update from our students so continue to check back to mpssaa.org.

Sincerely,

Maryland Delegation
