The MPSSAA Mourns the Passing of Former President, Clarence Johnson

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) mourns the passing of Clarence Johnson.  The MPSSAA and all future generations of participants, coaches, and programs will be forever indebted to the 50 plus years of service and leadership Mr. Johnson bestowed on the MPSSAA and interscholastic athletics.

Clarence Johnson Honored With NFHS State Award For Outstanding Service!!

The MPSSAA in 2018 honored Mr. Johnson with the NFHS State Award for Outstanding Service to a state association.  During his tenure in Somerset County, he worked with colleagues in the formation of the Bayside Conference, supporting the participation of interscholastic athletics in Caroline, Dorchester Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Wicomico, Worcester, and his home county, Somerset.  He served as President from 1977-79 of the conference, conference treasurer from 1979 - 2001, and became the Executive Director of the Conference.  

Mr. Johnson was elected MPSSAA President from 1986-1988 and held roles on the MPSSAA Executive Council, Board of Control, Finance Committee, as well as numerous other committees and taskforces.  

His legacy within the MPSSAA and the Bayside Conference will be remembered not by titles or committees, but with the remarkable personal respect, friendship, and collegiality that he brought to everyone he came in contact with.  The MPSSAA is honored and forever grateful for Mr. Johnson’s leadership and service to the association.
