State Champs Find A Way

The Boys' State Soccer Championships ended the way they started with nail-biting games going down to the wire.  Two repeat champions had all they could handle to retain their crowns, there was one first time champion, and one champ returning after a break of several years.  Select the links above for round by round results. (updated 11/19/11, 10:00 p.m.)

Play began on Thursday, 11/17 when Watkins Mill outscored Mt. Hebron, 3-1 for the Class 3A crown, their first ever in their first tournament appearance.  The Class 4A title bout took place on Friday, 11/18 as Bowie showed some late foot in edging Walter Johnson, 2-1 in the first overtime for the school's ninth crown.  A full day of soccer took place on Saturday, 11/19 beginning with Mountain Ridge successfully defending their Class 1A title against a tough Manchester Valley squad 4-1 in penalty kicks for a 1-0 win.  The final game of the tournament was the Class 2A Final where Marriotts Ridge won their third straight title by narrowly defeating Fallston, 1-0.  The distinguished recipient of the tournament Sportsmanship Award was Watkins Mills HS.  As an added bonus, the final games have been videotaped and will be shown on the internet. Commemorative DVD's will also be available for sale at the same site.  Click here to access the video and DVD's. (Note: Unfortunately, due to an equipment failure, the Class 1A Final was not covered.)

A debt of gratitude goes out to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Athletic Department and their hard-working staff for the superior cooperation and assistance provided to us prior to and throughout the State Finals.  The MPSSAA would also like to extend our sincerest appreciation to our State Boys' Soccer Committee, led by Director Bob Sheffler, for their sweat equity in directing the region tournaments and staffing the state semifinals and state finals sites.  There is no tournament without the efforts of these key individuals and are fortunate to have each of them on our "team".  Best wishes for an enjoyable off-season and we hope to see everyone back on the pitch next fall!
