State Champions Serve Notice...We're #1!

The Volleyball State Finals have roared to a thrilling and successful close with four titlists crowned number one.  Congratulations to Francis Scott Key (2A), Smithsburg (1A), Broadneck (4A), and Northern-Calvert (3A) for capping off fine seasons with state championships.  Click on the links above for results and statistics of each state semifinal and final match.

In the Class 2A final Francis Scott Key hoisted their 6th championship pennant at the expense of a talented North Caroline team, three games to none.  It was Key's first volleyball state title since 1996. Class 1A followed with Smithsburg topping a feisty Catoctin team three games to none.  This was also Smithsburg's sixth state volleyball title and first since 2001.  Broadneck continued their string of state crowns with their third in a row and sixth overall by turning back Montgomery County power Magruder three games to none.  In the final match of the day, Northern-Calvert  prevailed in a hard fought match, three games to one, over River Hill for their ninth overall volleyball championship and first since 2001.

The MPSSAA appreciates the efforts of the State Volleyball Committee in putting this tournament  together from the first round of the region tournaments to the Finals.  A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Services for the use of Ritchie Coliseum for five days. The cooperation and assistance that you give us is...priceless!  Congratulations also to all of the officials, coaches, and teams that participated in this year's tournament for the exciting play put on display for all of the spectators to appreciate and enjoy.  We look forward to seeing the same enthusiastic crowds at next year's tournament!
