"START" Officiating Program Expands Into Maryland

     The "Students of Today Are Referees of Tomorrow" program begins its' second year of existence by expanding into Maryland and several other middle Atlantic states.  This program, sponsored in part by four Division III conferences, encourages college students to enter scholastic officiating as an avocation, ultimately increasing the pool of collegiate officials.

     Stevenson University, in conjunction with the MPSSAA, will offer the START program on September 30th beginning at 7:00 PM in room SB-200 of the School of Business and Leadership Building on their campus.  All college students are eligible to participate in the program, not just students attending Stevenson. Information about this event has been publicized at the University of Maryland, Howard University, Morgan State University, UMBC, Bowie State University, Loyola University, Johns Hopkins University, College of Notre Dame, Goucher University, McDaniel College and all of the schools in the Capital Athletic Conference.

     This first ever "Maryland Officials Recruitment Night" will have numerous officiating associations/chapters present to register prospective officials interested in following the procedures for recruitment, training, and testing to become an official.  Participating officials associations at this year's event are: The Baltimore Board of Officials for Womens Sports (BBOWS) with field hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and girls lacrosse; the Washington Metropolitan Wrestling Officials; the Old Liine Board of Approved Soccer Officials; the Maryland Association of Softball Officials; the Southern Lacrosse Officials Association; and the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association.

DIRECTIONS: Take I-695 to Exit 19 (I-795) towards Owings Mills/Reisterstown.  Proceed to Exit 4 - Owings Mills Blvd. North. Go to the fourth traffic light (Boulevard Circle) and turn right.  Take second left behind shopping area and follow the driveway past the athletic facilities on the left to the top of the hill.  The School of Business & Leadership Building is on the far right when entering the parking area.
