The MPSSAA is saddened by the sudden passing of Sam Singleton on 8/31 and Walt Hardy on 9/2.  Our most heartfelt sympathies go out to the family, friends, students, and co-workers whose lives were touched by these two gentlemen.  Both Sam and Walt brought a positive energy with them in whatever they did and they will be sorely missed.

Sam Singleton served the MPSSAA as the Director of the State Track and Field Committee from 1998-2006 during his fourteen year teaching and coaching career at Oakland Mills HS in Howard County.  Sam led the Oakland Mills Boys track and field team to four State Class 2A titles and four State Class 1A titles during that time.  After his retirement in 2007, Sam continued to remain involved in track and field as an official and worked at the State Indoor and Outdoor meets, always with a ready smile.

Walt Hardy had just started his first year serving as the Athletic Director at Sherwood HS in Montgomery County on July 1st after spending the two previous years as Athletic Director at John F. Kennedy HS.  Prior to that, Walt taught and coached at Paint Branch HS for seventeen years where he led the Boys Varsity Basketball team to a State Championship in 2000.  Walt's legacy will be his high energy, sense of humor, and tireless dedication to his job.
