MPSSAA Congratulates 2024-25 NFHS Coaches of the Year

Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association
(MPSSAA) congratulates the twenty-three high school coaches from across Maryland that have been selected as 2024-25 National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches of the Year.

The NFHS annually honors a Coach of the Year in the top girls’ sports and top boys’ sports by participation numbers. The NFHS also recognizes a spirit and dance/poms coach as a separate award category. Winners of NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award. This year’s awards recognize coaches for the 2024-25 school year.

The recipients of this year’s awards for girls’ sports are: Mike Zivic, basketball, South River High School; Ayanna Weems, cross country, Leonardtown High School; Amy Skricus, field hockey, Crofton High School; Katy Kelley, lacrosse, Broadneck High School; Katherine Barry, soccer, Old Mill High School; Joe Hart, softball, Northeast-AA High School; Alexander Marley, swimming, Leonardtown High School; Amy Trainer, tennis, Huntingtown High School; Joey Young, Track and Field, Woodlawn High School; Robert Gibbons, volleyball, Northern-Cal High School.

Recipients of 2024-25 state awards for boys’ sports are: Guy Smith, baseball, Huntingtown High School; Michael Glick, basketball, Meade High School; Brandon Demers, cross country, Southern-AA High School; Jack Walsh, football, Arundel High School; Devin Gardner, golf, Broadneck High School; Joey Young, Indoor Track and Field, Woodlawn High School; KR Schultz, lacrosse, Catonsville High School; David Greene, soccer, Walt Whitman High School; Jon Leong, Poolesville High School; Stacy Severston, Track and Field, Crofton High School; John Klessinger, wrestling, South River High School.

The recipient of the state coach of the year award for spirit is Mary Metz of Sparrows Point High School. Jami King, a competitive cheer coach at Glen Burnie High School, and Timothy Swann, an allied/corollary sports coach at Northeast-AA High School, were selected as coaches of the year in their respective sports.
