Kings And Queens Of The Court

The tennis season has officially come to a close as the State Champions were crowned in weather conditions that resembled the start of the spring season as opposed to the end.  Continue reading to see who this year's kings and queens of the court are and to view the brackets with complete results for each of the five events: Boys' Singles, Girls' Singles, Boys' Doubles, Girls' Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. (updated 5/25/13, 4:20 p.m.)

In Boys' Singles, Biyik Akinshemoyin of Reservoir prevailed over Wootton's Mateo Cevallos in a rematch of last year's final by a score of 6-2, 6-1.  On the Girls' side, Irene Lu defeated Atholton teammate Victoria Kogan, 6-1, 6-4 for the Singles crown. The Wootton Boys' Doubles team of Gabriel Fan and Titas Bera brought home the gold medal after topping Baran Barris and William Schmidt of Walter Johnson, 6-1, 6-2.  Haley Keats and Syria Mowa of Winston Churchill won the Girls' Doubles title after shutting out Easton's Katie Clagett and Nova Jacobson, 6-0, 6-0.  Finally, the Mixed Doubles team of Michael and Katie Gauch from Winston Churchill bested Bryan Gieselman and Amanda Fewster from Winters Mill, 6-3, 6-1.

Our sincere thanks go to the State Tennis Committee and Director Russ Maxwell for all of their hard work in organizing and running both the region and State tournaments.  We also appreciate the cooperation and assistance that we receive from the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Services in holding the state championships at their facility.  Congratulations to all of our qualifiers and participants.  Keep practicing and working hard to improve your game so that we see you back at the state tournament again next year!
