How About A State Title...Just For Kicks?

The Girls' State Soccer Championships ended the way they started with tough defense and creative offense.  Two of last year's champions successfully defended their titles while two others broke through to win the first state soccer titles in their school's history.  Select the links above for complete round by round results. (updated 11/19/11, 8:40 p.m.)

Play began on Thursday, 11/17 when Huntingtown shut out Urbana, 1-0 for the Class 3A crown and their first state title. The Class 4A title bout took place on Friday, 11/18 as defending champ Bethesda-Chevy Chase was taken the distance by Severna Park before prevailing, in PK's 3-2 for a 1-0 win.  A full day of soccer took place on Saturday, 11/19 starting with Class 1A when Manchester Valley won their first state soccer title by defeating Brunswick, 4-1. The tournament closed with the Class 2A Final where Middletown won their sixth title and second in a row by nipping Southern, of Anne Arundel County, 1-0.  Southern did not go home empty handed as they were the distiniguished recipients of the tournament Sportmanship Award.  As an added bonus, the final games were videotaped and will be shown on the internet. Commemorative DVD's will also be available for sale at the same site. Click here to access the video and DVD's.  (Note: Unfortunately, due to an equipment failure, the Class 1A Final was not covered.)

A debt of gratitude goes out to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Athletic Department and their hard-working staff for the superior cooperation and assistance provided to us prior to and throughout the State Finals.  The MPSSAA would also like to extend our sincerest appreciation to our State Girls' Soccer Committee, led by Director Marianne Shultz, for their sweat equity in directing the region tournaments and staffing the state semifinals and state finals sites.  There is no tournament without the efforts of these key individuals and are fortunate to have each of them on our "team".  Best wishes for an enjoyable off-season and we hope to see everyone back on the pitch next fall!
