Gridiron Champs Conquer Opposition And Elements

The State Football Finals were competed in ideal spectating weather on Friday night and hardcore football weather on Saturday.  Hearty and supportive crowds were treated to the best football our state has to offer with Old Mill (4A), Eastern Technical (2A), Catoctin (1A), and Linganore (3A) hauling in state titles.

It was a weekend of "firsts" as a huge crowd on Friday night witnessed two teams going for their first ever state football titles in a hard fought battle where Old Mill HS nipped Dr. Henry A. Wise. Jr. HS 17-16 for the Class 4A championship.  On Saturday as the snow began falling, Catoctin HS reeled in their inaugural state football title in Class 1A by defeating Joppatowne HS 37-12.  With the temperatures steadily dropping, Eastern Technical HS kept with the weekend theme by battling to defeat a tough Queen Anne's HS 16-8 in Class 2A for their first state football crown. The Class 3A game saw Linganore attain a 5th state football title by virtue of their win over Huntingtown 31-14.

The MPSSAA appreciates the efforts of the State Football Committee in putting this tournament  together from the start of the region semifinals to the end of the State Finals.  A special thank you to the Ravens and the Maryland Stadium Authority staffs for the use of M&T Bank Stadium for our press conference and the two days of the tournament. This massive event could not have been nearly as successsful without their cooperation and assistance.  Congratulations also to all of the officials, coaches, and teams that participated in this year's tournament for the exciting play put on display for all of the spectators to appreciate and enjoy.  Next year's tournament promises to be even better and we hope to see everyone there again!
